Everyone likes stories...
Stories teach us a lot about the world around us, as well as ourselves. They often place certain things in context, to help us understand them better. History is not much different. We learn history to understand from where we have come to be able to move forward and make changes for the better.
Sometimes though, people don’t understand history as they should. They get the facts wrong and resent the wrong people for the wrong reasons. In this way, they get stuck in the past unnecessarily. It makes it very difficult to move on to a better future.
This year, South Africa celebrates 21 years of democracy. Despite the various levels of freedom democracy brings to a country, there are still many people who are intolerant of others just because they follow a different political party, a different religion or simply have a different skin tone. Every one of us needs to look ahead and take many more steps forward, together, respecting each other’s differences, for a brighter future. Will you join me? I hope so! Everything is better together!
