Description

Every issue of Supernova magazine is a celebration of curiosity. But this time, we’re taking that celebration to the stars!

In this issue, we’re honouring the extraordinary life of Katherine Goble Johnson, a special woman whose love of numbers helped launch astronauts into space and changed the course of history. Katherine didn’t start out as a famous scientist. She was once a young girl who simply loved solving problems. While other kids were playing outside, she was happily counting steps, cracking puzzles, and asking big questions about the world. She didn’t know it then, but each curious moment was shaping her future… one that would lead her all the way to NASA! What inspires me most about Katherine is not just her brilliant mathematics, but her courage.

She worked during a time when women, especially Black women, were told that science and engineering “weren’t for them”. But she kept going. She kept learning. And she kept showing up with determination, kindness, and a mind that refused to be underestimated. Her story reminds us that talent knows no boundaries, and that your passions (whether it’s numbers, art, technology, animals, or writing) can take you places you never imagined. Katherine teaches us that you don’t need to be the loudest person in the room to make a difference; you just need to be the one who doesn’t give up. I hope you feel inspired to follow your own curiosity wherever it leads. Ask questions.

Be brave. Keep learning. And remember: the world (and maybe even outer space) needs thinkers like you!
