Day 3 –  Make a Time Capsule

Let’s get back down to earth. It’s sunny outside and it’s the perfect time to run around the garden and pretend that you’re a magnificent serval. We had so much fun making this mask!

What to do:

We used flour and water to make the glue for the paper-mâché.

    1. Draw the face of your serval on a piece of scrap paper.
    2. Blow up a balloon to use as your form. Make sure the balloon is big enough to fit your face.
    3. Stick the cheeks of your mask to the balloon and pinch the ears.
    4. Rip strips of newspapers about 15cm long and 5cm wide.
    5. Mix flour and water together for your paste. Start by mixing one cup of flour and one cup of water. The paste should be thinner than pancake batter, but thick enough to stick to the newspaper strips. To make sure there are no lumps in your mixture, stick your hands in there.
    6. Dip a strip of newspaper into the paste. Wipe off any extra paste. Place the strip onto the mask, making sure to smooth out any wrinkled bits, or air bubbles. Repeat this step with the rest of the newspaper strips, sticking them to the mask in a criss-cross pattern. Make sure that the strips overlap each other slightly.
    7. Cover all the elements of your mask with the newspaper strips dipped in paste. Do not cover the eyes of your serval.
    8. Let the mask dry completely. Add a second and third layer for extra strength to your mask. (Make sure that each layer of paper-mâché dries completely before adding the next layer)
    9. Let the finished mask dry completely in the sun. If you’re lucky, the mask will fall off the balloon by itself when it’s completely dry. If it doesn’t, pop the balloon.
    10. Use a drawing of a serval as reference to paint your new mask.
    11. We went one step further and stuck small pieces of paper on the mask to resemble hair.
