What’s Inside?

Feature articles

  • Birds of a feather: Explore the fancy world of feathers — In our environment feature, Ant Eco chats to us about South Africa’s bird diversity and especially about the amazing world of features.
  • Covid-19 and Me — We are living through historic times. Supernova’s 50th issue comes out during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of you have been at home for months. This article is about how to protect yourself from the disease and how to look after your mental health too!
  • The Origins of Red — We take a lot of things for granted, but Supernova likes to stop once in a while and look at things in a little more detail. In this issue we look at the colour red and ask ourselves why it is such an important colour historically and in our day-to-day lives.
  • Spoonerism: Twong tisters — Do you often get tongue-tied? Sometimes the thing we want to say comes out all wrong. Read some of the funniest phrases called Spoonerisms.

Description

SUPERNOVA’S ZOOM CELEBRATION PARTY!

Supernova is celebrating 50 issues! This is something I only dreamed of when I first started it in 2011. Over the years, I’ve worked with some of the most amazing people who have given their all to create a magazine that is loved by children all over South Africa. It is a privilege to publish this magazine for you, our wonderful readers. ~ Benoit Knox

Supernova celebrates locally-produced content for kids. Actually, anyone can page through it and fi nd it engaging. That’s why I love working on it… every page is well thought-through, beautifully designed and fascinating to read. It’s a family magazine created by a work family who loves to produce the absolute best for its readers. Congrats, Supernova. ~ Saskia Brits

I have spent 5 excellent years at this awesome magazine with a brilliantly talented team. I am so grateful for the time I had at Supernova and I am super excited for the massive magazine milestone of 50 issues! To think that a good 2600 full colour pages have been published so far and each one of those pages was curated with care with the tiniest attention to detail! Festivities for fifty issues! ~ Alexandar Moolman

Supernova, to me, encapsulates all the possibilities of childhood. As adults, we’re forced to specify, to become good enough at one thing that we can get paid for doing it. As children, we’re allowed (even encouraged) to learn and discover the fascinating world around us. Writing for Supernova allows me to be a child again: I can explore a diverse range of topics with childlike wonder. ~ Kendall Behr

When I was first introduced to Supernova Magazine in 2019, I was absolutely blown away. I loved every minute of working on this extraordinary magazine. It’s fantastic that, even as a grown-up, I can pick up a Supernova and enjoy the entertaining and educational content! ~ Su – Mia Hoffman

My experience working at Supernova has been an exciting one and a huge learning curve, a lot of these lessons being from Supernova magazine itself. To see the magazine being created from the ground up has been absolutely fascinating and I’m really honoured to be part of the Supernova team. ~ Siya Simelane

My first article was about the amazing Karoo. A topic as extensive and interesting as Supernova magazine! I learnt so much over the years researching the articles and even more reading each new issue. Thank you Supernova for expanding our horizons! ~ Antoinette Eyssell-Knox
